For new procedures in obtaining background screenings click on the "Safesport/Background Check" under "Helpful Links". All Associations need to provide documentation to TAHA that states that background checks were successfully completed on all coaches, managers, and volunteers.
Screenings are good with TAHA for two years. Screenings should be run through NCSI via TAHA's link below or on the Safesport page.
Texas Amateur Hockey (TAHA) has adopted a new policy to reduce the risk of young players becoming a victim of sexual or physical abuse. To carry out this policy, coaches, referees, board members and officers of TAHA and its affiliate members are required to consent to random background checks every other year (rather than every third year).
With the implementation of USA Hockey’s SafeSport Policy, TAHA has revised its policies and procedures under which background screenings (BGS) will be conducted. Additionally, a new standing Background Screening Committee of TAHA has been created to help provide oversight and accountability regarding background screening issues.
In addition to the primary background screening process, Screening Consent Forms are collected at the time of registration each year from coaches, referees and board members, officers and directors. These consent forms are checked for accuracy, and then a random number may be selected and sent to the Texas / Oklahoma Bureau of Investigations or other criminal justice database sources for searches of criminal histories etc.
Every TAHA member should be proud of their affiliate’s proactive steps toward providing a safe environment for its participants. This very critical area of TAHA’s SafeSport Program is only successful because of the combined efforts of the local associations, registrars, board members, BGS Committee, and TAHA leadership recognize the importance of this issue and are committed to maintaining the standards set by this policy and have fulfilled their duties regarding the BGS process including disqualifications, appeals, etc.
TAHA is 100% committed to this policy as well as making the hockey community and the public-at-large more aware that this organization, because of the concern for the well-being of the kids playing hockey, has committed significant resources and effort to make hockey free of any criminal element, safer for the participants regardless of age and gender, and provide an example of a responsible organization.
For more information on the Texas Amateur Hockey Association’s screening policy, please don’t hesitate to contact your local Association President or TAHA Board Member.
